This note attempts to identify the specific characteristics of corporate entrepreneurship and the situations in which it is a particularly appropriate method of innovation. They can succeed by finding the right balance in setting strategy, operating the business, and designing the organization. To be competitive, companies must grow innovative new businesses. New ventures face innumerable barriers and seldom mesh smoothly with well-established systems, processes, and cultures. Nonetheless, success requires a balance of old and new organizational traits—and unless companies keep those opposing forces in equilibrium, their new businesses will flounder.

Corporate Entrepreneurship as a Paradigm for Successful Competition and Growth

An entrepreneur is a person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture. This concept is termed corporate entrepreneurship. Corporate Entrepreneurship CE is a set of strategies utilized by established firms to promote growth and development of the organization. Some firms attempt to achieve these entrepreneurial outcomes through internal development while others resort to corporate venturing to achieve their growth goals. While most firms realize that it is absolutely critical to continuously innovate for survival and growth, many struggle to achieve such outcomes. Ultimately, firms look to create sustainable competitive advantage in order to compete with their rivals. Firms that effectively compete are those who find ways to remain one step ahead of the competition.

This chapter examines the concept of CE, the organizational antecedents conducive to CE, and the managerial roles needed at all levels of management, thus presenting a more complete understanding of the concepts behind a CE strategy.
