Engine oils are made from crude oil and its derivatives by mixing of certain other chemicals additives for improving their certain properties. Lubricating oil is used to lubricate moving parts of engine, reducing friction, protecting against wear, and removing contaminants from the engine, act as a cleaning agent, and act as an anticorrosion and cooling agent. This research effort focuses on comparative study of re-refined engine oils by extraction of composite solvent, single solvent, and acid treatment methods. Composite solvent was made up of butanol-propane and butanone; propane was used as single solvent. Different properties of refined oil and waste oil were analyzed, such as cloud and pour point, flash point, specific gravity, ash content, viscosity, moisture ratio and acid value. Results from the flash point, pour point, viscosity, specific gravity, and ash percentage were improved at different degrees, but the best results were seen by using the composite solvent with having drawback of expensiveness.

Used oil is any oil, whether refined from crude or synthetic, that has been contaminated by physical or chemical impurities as a result of use. Typical uses include automotive and industrial lubricants, including spent motor oil, hydraulic fluids, refrigeration coolants, metalworking and cutting oils, and electrical insulating oil. Among the facilities generating used oil are vehicle repair shops, fleet maintenance facilities, industries, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions. Used oil is also generated by private citizens who change the motor oil on their own vehicles and are known as household do-it-yourself oil changers or DIYs. New York State generally follows federal standards regulating all used oil facility types while at the same time State law provides numerous locations where a DIY who is otherwise exempt from regulation can return used oil for recycling. Under Article 23, Title 23 of the Environmental Conservation Law ECL link leaves DEC's website , any service establishment that sells at least gallons per year of new oil and performs vehicle servicing must accept from the public, at no charge , up to 5 gallons of used oil per person per day. Retailers who don't service vehicles but sell at least 1, gallons per year of new oil must either accept used oil from the public, as service establishments do, or contract to have another service or retail establishment accept it on their behalf.

Automotive oil recycling involves the recycling of used oils and the creation of new products from the recycled oils, and includes the recycling of motor oil and hydraulic oil. Oil recycling also benefits the environment: [1] increased opportunities for consumers to recycle oil lessens the likelihood of used oil being dumped on lands and in waterways. For example, one gallon of motor oil dumped into waterways has the potential to pollute one million gallons of water. Recycled motor oil can be combusted as fuel, usually in plant boilers, space heaters, or industrial heating applications such as blast furnaces and cement kilns. Used oil re-refining is the process of restoring used oil to new oil by removing chemical impurities, heavy metals and dirt.

Waste Engine Oils presents a complete description of the field of engine used oils, widely collected in the networks of services-stations and garages. It describes the manufacture of base oils in refineries, and mentions the main additives playing an essential role in the quality of the marketed finished oils. The organization of the different systems of collecting in order to obtain a waste oil regenerable or used as fuel are explained. This book covers the main operations of physical and chemical treatments required in waste oil regeneration by covering the fundamental principles techniques such as vacuum distillation, solvent deasphalting, and ultrafiltration. A wide part is dedicated to applications with the description of about twenty processes. In addition, the book describes several types of energetic valorizations which concern a quite important fraction of the collected oil volume. Waste oil regenerators, waste oil energy recovery users, process licensors, consultants, administration executives, chemical and petroleum engineers, environmental chemists and government officials.
