Difference Between Qualitative and Quantitative Research

The distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is abstract, very general and its value is usually taken for granted. In contrast, this article attempts to show that the distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is unclear, poor and therefore of limited value and that its popularity risks leading to unfortunate consequences.

Various arguments are presented for this conclusion. For example, it is argued that the heterogeneity of different stand-points on important issues among qualitative researchers for example with respect to the use of quantification and causal analysis makes the distinction as such unstable.

Moreover, the presence of substantial overlap between many features of qualitative and quantitative research often makes it difficult to separate qualitative and quantitative research. It is also shown that three obvious ways of making the distinction between qualitative and quantitative research are unsatisfactory.

Use of the distinction may restrict creativity in the development of new research methods and create confusion and unnecessary work. In general, it may be preferable not to conceptualize research approaches at such abstract levels as done in the context of qualitative or quantitative approaches.

Instead, it is suggested that it is more fruitful to discuss the pros and cons of specific research methods, preferably in the context of specific research problems. Qualitative vs. quantitative research

Research is the most widely used tool to increase and brush-up the stock of knowledge about something and someone. While the qualitative research relies on verbal narrative like spoken or written data, the quantitative research uses logical or statistical observations to draw conclusions. In a qualitative research, there are only a few non-representative cases are used as a sample to develop an initial understanding.

Qualitative research deals in more abstract descriptions while quantitative research deals in numbers and actual hard data. Variables Study of the whole, not variables. The difference between qualitative and quantitative research is fairly simple, yet their consequences are diverse and often complicated.

Let us know your requirements, contact us for your CATI fieldwork or for further information and one of our Sales Managers representatives will get in touch with you shortly. Your telephone display indicates that one of our numbers has tried to reach you several times. FFIND conducts telephone surveys at a national and international level for various clients. For representative surveys your telephone number is selected and called using a mathematical random process. It can occur that numbers are selected that are neither listed in the telephone book nor on the internet. We merely have a telephone number at hand; without any further information whatever.

Our pages Introduction to Research Methods and Designing Research set out some of the issues about the underlying philosophy. This page provides an introduction to the broad principles of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the advantages and disadvantages of each in particular situations. Qualitative research seeks to answer questions about why and how people behave in the way that they do.

Revised on February 15, When collecting and analyzing data, quantitative research deals with numbers and statistics, while qualitative researc h deals with words and meanings. Both are important for gaining different kinds of knowledge. Qualitative research Qualitative research is expressed in words. It is used to understand concepts, thoughts or experiences.

Quantitative data are used when a researcher is trying to quantify a problem, or address the "what" or "how many" aspects of a research question. It is data that can either be counted or compared on a numeric scale. For example, it could be the number of first year students at Macalester, or the ratings on a scale of of the quality of food served at Cafe Mac. This data are usually gathered using instruments, such as a questionnaire which includes a ratings scale or a thermometer to collect weather data. Statistical analysis software, such as SPSS, is often used to analyze quantitative data. Qualitative data describes qualities or characteristics. It is collected using questionnaires, interviews, or observation, and frequently appears in narrative form.
