ABO blood group system

Jump to navigation. Online publication date: Molecular immunohematology refers to the detection of the molecular genetic basis of an antigen, rather than the antigen alone. Use of molecular testing in clinical laboratories requires knowledge of the molecular basis of blood group antigens and the availability of suitable genotyping methods that can be used in our testing environment. Molecular testing has essentially replaced serologic typing for the extremely polymorphic HLA system antigens. Molecular typing may also be used for platelet and neutrophil antigen systems, as the genetic basis of these systems is further characterized. This may be particularly useful since commercial antisera are not readily available for typing for many of these antigen systems.

ABO blood group system , the classification of human blood based on the inherited properties of red blood cells erythrocytes as determined by the presence or absence of the antigens A and B, which are carried on the surface of the red cells. See blood group. Blood containing red cells with type A antigen on their surface has in its serum fluid antibodies against type B red cells. In the same way, type A red cells will be destroyed by anti-A antibodies in type B blood. Type O blood can be injected into persons with type A, B, or O blood unless there is incompatibility with respect to some other blood group system also present. Blood group O is the most common blood type throughout the world, particularly among peoples of South and Central America. Type B is prevalent in Asia, especially in northern India.

A blood type also known as a blood group is a classification of blood , based on the presence and absence of antibodies and inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells RBCs. These antigens may be proteins , carbohydrates , glycoproteins , or glycolipids , depending on the blood group system. Some of these antigens are also present on the surface of other types of cells of various tissues. Several of these red blood cell surface antigens can stem from one allele or an alternative version of a gene and collectively form a blood group system. Blood types are inherited and represent contributions from both parents. A complete blood type would describe each of the 38 blood groups, and an individual's blood type is one of many possible combinations of blood-group antigens.

Understanding different blood types

Supportive therapy in haematology pp Cite as. Since the discovery [1] of the ABO blood group system in , more than additional red cell blood group antigens have been identified [2]. Obviously, in a chapter of this length very few of the known complexities can be described. In clinical medicine the major importance of the antigens is the role they play in red cell transfusions. Accordingly, in this chapter an attempt is made to describe the antigens predominantly in that setting. Other aspects of the red cell blood groups as they pertain to certain disease states are mentioned and in some instances brief details about the biochemistry, genetics, serology and immunology of the blood group systems are given in an attempt to make the role of these systems in transfusion therapy more comprehensible.

The ABO blood group is the most important of all the blood group systems. These naturally occurring antibodies are mainly IgM immunoglobulins. They attack and rapidly destroy red cells carrying the corresponding antigen. If ABO incompatible red cells are transfused, red cell haemolysis can occur.

Racial differences in blood group antigen distribution are common and may result in striking and interesting findings. These differences in blood group antigen distribution are important due to their influence on the clinical practice of transfusion medicine. Study Design and Methods. This is a prospective study, involving healthy regular repeat voluntary blood donors associated with the department. The clinically significant minor blood group antigens of these donors were studied.

Blood group antigens are not only confined to red cells but can be found on other cells and tissue types, including epithelium and body fluids.
