I've read and reread several collections of poetry for specific Chinese poets in the past Tu Fu, Li Po, and Po Chu-i , but I'd yet to come across a collection that offered a vast review of the centuries of Chinese writing.

Since the book includes so many authors, it provides a rather shallow look into each of them, which I absolutely do not consider a bad thing. In fact, I would recommend this collection to anyone interested in pursuing further knowledge of Chinese poetry. With a light wind and a small oar I paddle out from the rushy creek.

In high spirit I raise my song, And in the quiet of the night my voice is wondrous and clear. But there is no one to enjoy it, So I myself applaud, As the song echoes from a thousand hills. Huang Yu-Tsao In the deep hall the dust dissipates, the noon-tide heat fades; Smoke curls like a dream, and the day is lagging, lagging. The light wind seems in treaty with the lotus; Bearing the fragrance along, it rolls up the curtain.

Simple stories of simple people Living in the country, With green grass gardens And autumn trees all lined-up There was a time when I read poetry for fun And I think the time's come back again.

There's a distinctive style employed by Chinese poets. Simple poetry with simple words. The common subject of nature, man-wife relationships, and conversation make me feel nostalgic for a place I haven't even see with my very eyes. I like this.
