Therefore, itino longer sufficient to define culture solely as something that a minority guards. Our definition of culture is being stretched beyond the fine art limits imposed. Within this definition, rejection of the mass produced arts is. The new role forlie academic is keeper of the flame; the new role for the fine arts is to be one of theessible forms of communication in an expanding framework that also includeshe mass arts.

In his poems, he juxtaposed everyday or pop images with highbrow cultural references, creating a web of references that made his work both complex and accessible. He gave numerous live readings and, in the s and s, fronted the poetry-and-rock group Liverpool Scene, signed by RCA. The show included paintings, collages, prints, annotated scripts, artefacts and ephemera, silkscreened rock posters, stage wear and other rare and recently discovered audio recordings and film footage. In Man, Machine, Motion , the exhibition Hamilton curated at the ICA, means of transport—aquatic, terrestrial, aerial and interplanetary—were shown to have transformed our perception of the spaces we inhabit. Advertising leaflets, slogans, commercial designs and flashing neon signs thus found their way into his poems, paintings, collages and happenings; they were used to depict and to comment on the very world from which they were taken.

Within a brief and intense early career, Kaprow progressed from an interest in Abstract Expressionism and many-levelled paintings incorporating collage to assemblage. He enrolled in Hans Hofmann's painting school Through Hofmann he began to develop an expressive, high spirited style of action painting, based on real landscapes and figures, which was to lead, by a number of well-defined and documented steps, to the happenings of a decade later. With a number of Hofmann's students he cofounded the Hansa Gallery named after their teacher , a cooperative artists gallery on East 10th Street in Greenwich Village. He soon moved away from the single art object or picture frame to environments and to a new art form called Happenings. The paintings he showed at the Hansa Gallery in New York revealed an attempt to use many types of images and orientations within one work.

A critical turning point has been reached in a major area of avant-garde effort, which I believe is entirely to the good but which is forcing upon us the possibly disagreeable task of revising some cherished assumptions regarding the nature of the plastic arts. Certain advanced works being done at this moment are rapidly losing their traditional identities and something else, quite far-reaching in its implications, is taking their place. On the one hand, looking broadly at the whole of recent modern art, the differences which were once so clear between graphic art and painting have practically been eliminated; similarly, the distinctions between painting and collage, between collage and construction, between construction and sculpture, and between some large constructions and a quasi architecture. This continuity is significant, the critical issue in fact; for drawing and painting, and in a large measure sculpture and the so-called minor arts, have until now been completely dependent upon the conditions set down by the structure of the house: one need only imagine a canvas without a flat wall and the cubic enframement of the room, a chair on an irregular floor. Artists for at least a century have worked as though the only thing of importance were the work in front of them, a world unto itself. And these conditions are without any doubt changing now.

Paying Attention, Participating in the Whole: Allan Kaprow alongside Lygia Clark

A happening is a performance, event, or situation art , usually as performance art. The term was first used by Allan Kaprow during the s to describe a range of art-related events. Allan Kaprow first coined the term "happening" in the spring of at an art picnic at George Segal 's farm to describe the art pieces that were going on. Jack Kerouac referred to Kaprow as "The Happenings man", and an ad showing a woman floating in outer space declared, "I dreamt I was in a happening in my Maidenform brassiere". Happenings are difficult to describe, in part because each one is unique and completely different from one another.
