Brazing is a metal -joining process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, with the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal. Brazing differs from welding in that it does not involve melting the work pieces and from soldering in using higher temperatures for a similar process, while also requiring much more closely fitted parts than when soldering. The filler metal flows into the gap between close-fitting parts by capillary action.

Introduction to Welding and Brazing covers the various aspects of metal joining processes, theory, practice, and application. This book is composed of nine chapters. Considerable chapters are devoted to the processes, practice, and principles of arc, resistance, and pressure welding.

A chapter describes the principles and applications of other welding processes, such as gas, thermit, and electron beam welding. The final chapters deal with the metallurgical application, practice, and principles of soldering and brazing. Authors' Preface Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Handbook of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology pp Cite as. This book chapter deals with the basics of arc welding processes, heat source used for arc welding, different types of arc polarities, effect of shielding gases, and welding power sources necessary for arc welding. The fundamentals of formation of arc and arc physics were discussed. In this chapter, different types of high precision arc welding process will be discussed. This chapter also describes the high productivity arc welding processes like twin wire gas tungsten arc cladding, plasma cladding, and laser-arc hybrid welding processes.

Introduction to Welding and Brazing

Welding is a fabrication process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics , by using high heat to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool, causing fusion. Welding is distinct from lower temperature metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering , which do not melt the base metal. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is typically added to the joint to form a pool of molten material the weld pool that cools to form a joint that, based on weld configuration butt, full penetration, fillet, etc. Pressure may also be used in conjunction with heat or by itself to produce a weld. Welding also requires a form of shield to protect the filler metals or melted metals from being contaminated or oxidized. Many different energy sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame chemical , an electric arc electrical , a laser , an electron beam , friction , and ultrasound. While often an industrial process, welding may be performed in many different environments, including in open air, under water , and in outer space.

The welding stick uses electric current to form an electric arc between the stick and the metals to be joined. To weld iron and steel, this type of welding is often used in the construction of steel structures and in industrial fabrication. Stick welding can be used for manufacturing, construction and repair work. The Weld Joints 3. Physics of Welding 4. Features of a Fusion Welded Joint.

In arc welding, the intense heat needed to melt metal is produced by an electric arc. The arc is formed between the actual work and an electrode stick or wire that is manually or mechanically guided along the joint. The electrode can either be a rod with the purpose of simply carrying the current between the tip and the work. Or, it may be a specially prepared rod or wire that not only conducts the current but also melts and supplies filler metal to the joint. Most welding in the manufacture of steel products uses the second type of electrode.
