But less well understood is the need not just for fast computers but also for ever-faster and higher-performing computers at the same or better costs. Exponential growth of the type and scale that have fueled the entire information technology industry is ending. Meanwhile, societal expectations for increased technology performance continue apace and show no signs of slowing, and this underscores the need for ways to sustain exponentially increasing performance in multiple dimensions. The essential engine that has met this need for the last 40 years is now in considerable danger, and this has serious implications for our economy, our military, our research institutions, and our way of life.
Because an embedded system typically controls physical operations of the machine that it is embedded within, it often has real-time computing constraints. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today. Modern embedded systems are often based on microcontrollers i. In either case, the processor s used may be types ranging from general purpose to those specialized in a certain class of computations, or even custom designed for the application at hand. A common standard class of dedicated processors is the digital signal processor DSP. Since the embedded system is dedicated to specific tasks, design engineers can optimize it to reduce the size and cost of the product and increase the reliability and performance. Some embedded systems are mass-produced, benefiting from economies of scale.

Before we learn Embedded System, lets learn: What is a System? A system is an arrangement where all its component work according to the specific defined rules. It is a method of organizing, working, or performing one or more tasks according to a fixed plan. What is an Embedded System? Embedded System is a combination of computer software and hardware which is either fixed in capability or programmable.

General Purpose Computer, Embedded Systems. It is designed using a microprocessor as the main processing unit. It is mostly designed using a microcontroller.
Embedded System Architectures
As computer systems become more and more ubiquitous in everyday items, the workings of those items will require some sort of digital controlling. Controllers that once handled large mechanical systems now work inside smaller digital and mechanical devices. These microcontrollers are not the same as embedded computer processors, however. While sharing similar functionality, both integrate into their roles in computers in a different way, and for different reasons.
