Verified Purchase. This is a fascinating book by the late Alfred Gell. His explanation and justification of idolatry 'Let's call it by what it is' is worth the whole book alone. An excellent volume for anthropology students and museum curators who care for ethnographic material. Too bad Alfred Gell left us far too soon for he produced a work of great importance.

Posthumousness will see this book rise to the top of the most significant publications of our times for there are numerous research avenues and applications of Gell's insights which can be taken from this book.

Art and Agency was written with great haste as Gell was terminally ill, so a final chapter is necessary to bring all the threads together, as the book ends abruptly.
