Love and Other Man-Made Disasters

There was all that typical drama rama about first love and the first, nervous experiences teenagers have with them. So blah, blah, blah. Nothing special, like I said.

What did appeal to me was the skiing. I haven't come across. I haven't come across many young-adult novels with skiing being somehow incorporated into them: Actually, I think this is my first.

There weren't much facts, and I believe the author missed out on them. If she could have explored skiing a bit more maybe from Boy's point of view, it would have made the story more solid and well developed. It definitely would have said that the author dedicated time to research the information.

The best way to describe this novel as a whole is probably It was an easy read; I quickly flew through it and really didn't think much of it afterwards. I'd strongly recommend to read this if you are going somewhere snowy! It definitely feels like the type of read that great to fly through or take on a journey you know will probably pull you away often. I think its lightness mostly stemmed from the fact that it didn't delve into the deep dark side of the characters. I'm being very honest here: Boy and Juno are two I don't see a very long future for.

They were just different for each other and whilst I was caught up in their romance for a little while, and they did seem appealing together in the moment, I can't imagine them lasting long. The pace was steady and a bit boring. Just too average for my liking. The writing was well done but again nothing special. The cover was Like it attempted too but didn't quite get there. Emotionally, I couldn't really connect with either of the characters. It was like every experience was from behind a thinly stretched bubble wrap that almost had me feeling what they were feeling but not quite.

Now that her mam has remarried, she's on her way to Austria, to spend her Easter holidays skiing with her new step-family. Suffice to say, she's not looking forward to it. Really, she could be spending that time much better by revising for her A-Levels, but no, she's in hell. There's so many dangerous things that could happen on a skiing holiday, so she's snuck some revision into her suitcase, and is planning on getting out of skiing as much as possible.

It's only when she meets Boy, one of the ski instructors that she decides it might not all be so bad. I don't know how I feel about this book, to be honest. I never really felt connected with the story, and it wasn't the most interesting.

Juno was a nice character, and I could understand her panic at missing out on prime revision time, because the run up to A-Levels is really stressful, when your whole future basically depends on a few exams. I also could understand that she wasn't too keen on being forced to spend time with her new family, especially when her new twin step-brothers are little rascals.

The romance, though, seemed ridiculous. I understood the connection between Boy and Juno, both everything else just felt rushed, and so unrealistic. Something happens later in the book, and Juno decides to stay in Austria, without her family, for at least a week, to be with Boy, and just completely disregards her upcoming exams. Honestly, it was a complete on how she was in the beginning. That was the nail in the coffin for me, and if I hadn't been close to the end, and had nothing else with me to read on my journey, I wouldn't have finished it.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend this one, but I do know that some people enjoyed the book, so maybe it was just me. Jul 01, Inkfae rated it really liked it. I don't usually read contemporary novels, but I had to pick this one up just because the author was Irish yes, I have a real obsession with Ireland.

At first, I thought it was going to be one of these fluffy and cheesy reads but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the main character and the love interest. I think they were smart and realistic and I liked the fact that they weren't all over each other all the time. The story never felt flat, which made this book a real page-turner. I real I don't usually read contemporary novels, but I had to pick this one up just because the author was Irish yes, I have a real obsession with Ireland.

I really recommend this book. Apr 13, Michelle rated it really liked it. These are just some of the things I'm afraid of.

Climate change. World War Three. Terrorist attacks. Getting cancer and dying. Getting cancer and dying without ever falling in love. I'm pretty sure that if I get cancer, there won't be a gorgeous guy with one leg in my support group. My hair getting caught in a bus or car door and strangling me.

Being kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer and buried in someone's back garden. Failing all my A levels. Or doing badly and it all g These are just some of the things I'm afraid of. Or doing badly and it all goes wrong from there and I can't get a job and have to live at home for ever —wherever home is. Civilisation breaking down and me dying because I don't know the right berries to eat. Obviously they don't exist, but still. Skiing and other dangerous sports.

Urban foxes. They know how to get inside houses, and there was one on the news that mugged a man for his quiche.

Striking a balance between realism and artifice is a difficult task for any fiction writer, but for those whose work bends toward the fantastical, the problem is particularly acute. What follows is a period of collective madness on the island, as he begins hauling the corpse around town and presenting her as his girlfriend. His family accepts her as a silent presence on the living room sofa, keeping the boy company while he watches TV. His schoolmates let her sit with the popular girls, a horribly still figure with an enigmatic smile, closed eyes and a well-preserved noose around her neck. Russell excels at a kind of creeping, low-level horror. The boy is devoted, until the bog girl reanimates and begins to speak.
