- Industry Overview
Considered being the biggest sector in the world in terms of dollar value, the oil and gas sector is a global powerhouse using hundreds of thousands of workers worldwide and generating hundreds of billions of dollars globally each year. In regions which house the major NOCs, these oil and gas companies are so vital they often contribute a significant amount towards national GDP. The energy sector has three key areas: Upstream , midstream and downstream.
They must know the working cycle of the industry and the responsibilities of the different sectors involved in the process. The oil and gas industry is one of the largest industrial sectors in the world in terms of generating value in dollars. This is also known as the petroleum industry. This industry is very crucial to the global economic framework especially for countries like the United States, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Canada, and China. Petroleum is important to many industries and is necessary for the operating and maintenance of Industrial plants, machines, and transportation purposes.
Oil and Gas Industry: A Research Guide
The oil and gas industry is usually divided into three major sectors: upstream , midstream , and downstream. The downstream sector is the refining of petroleum crude oil and the processing and purifying of raw natural gas , as well as the marketing and distribution of products derived from crude oil and natural gas.
The downstream sector reaches consumers through products such as gasoline or petrol , kerosene , jet fuel , diesel oil , heating oil , fuel oils , lubricants , waxes , asphalt , natural gas , and liquefied petroleum gas LPG as well as hundreds of petrochemicals. Midstream operations are often included in the downstream category and are considered to be a part of the downstream sector. Crude oil is a mixture of many varieties of hydrocarbons and most usually have many sulfur-containing compounds.
The oil refining process commonly includes hydrodesulfurization which converts most of that sulfur into gaseous hydrogen sulfide. Raw natural gas also may contain gaseous hydrogen sulfide and sulfur-containing mercaptans , which are removed in natural-gas processing plants before the gas is distributed to consumers.
The hydrogen sulfide removed in the refining and processing of crude oil and natural gas is subsequently converted into byproduct elemental sulfur. In fact, the vast majority of the 64,, metric tons of sulfur produced worldwide in was byproduct sulfur from refineries and natural-gas processing plants.
ISO defines "downstream" in its definition section as: 3. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For other uses, see Downstream disambiguation. Coalbed methane Extraction of petroleum Hydrocarbon exploration Midstream Natural gas Natural-gas condensate Natural gas field.

UPSTREAM? MIDSTREAM? DOWNSTREAM? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
It is safe to say that everyone in the U. Even more people benefit from the products of the industry. Products include the obvious gasoline and fuel products that most of us put in our cars, asphalt for the roads we ride on, and other fuels such as diesel used to run the equipment used on farms to produce the food we eat. But they also include less obvious products such as synthetic rubbers think sneakers , fertilizers, preservatives, and plastics for many other products. In fact, just about everything that is manufactured is connected somehow to the oil and gas industry.
The term 'upstream' also includes the steps involved in the actual drilling and bringing oil and natural gas resources to the surface, referred to.
This section covers researching past and present oil and gas companies, resources for starting a company in the oil and gas industries, and references to top companies. The oil and gas industry is frequently divided into three segments: upstream, midstream and downstream. While each of these areas has a number of independent companies, major companies in oil and gas are often considered integrated , meaning their businesses consist of a mix of upstream, midstream and downstream activities. Companies can be private, public, or state-owned, which impacts the amount of information available. Regardless of size, there is more data available for publicly-owned companies.
But do you know what they mean? This refers to anything having to do with the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Midstream includes pipelines and all the infrastructure needed to move these resources long distances, such as pumping stations, tank trucks, rail tank cars and transcontinental tankers.
