Strongholds and Followers gives options for players to build fortresses and bases of operations for their party complete with class-specific annexes, a host of artisans, assistants, and military units to help maintain your stronghold and protect it from attack. Kingdoms and Warfare will go into rules about keeping political rule over your stronghold and environs, and how to assault your neighbours on a political and military front. Whatever rules come out the other side of this campaign will be tried, tested, and fun, and the book will also be building on a few other fan favourite elements.

I really like this part of the book, there are rules on how to build and maintain a stronghold that come with their own demesne. Retainers, masons, soldiers, alchemists… there is something for everyone. Be sure to check the Rules Page for updated rules. What would be helpful for your campaigns? This page does not exist.

Strongholds and Followers Review

Image Copyright by Matt Colville. Strongholds and Followers from the upstart MCDM productions has the honor of being one of the top Kickstarter projects of all time. Did it succeed? Muster your forces and man the castle walls as we go through everything you need to know. About half the content is spent outlining the mechanics of the titular strongholds and followers, with the remaining half dedicated to an adventure path and a surprisingly large bestiary.

All told, it contains:. Keeps, castles, and other big installations can be an end goal for a party, or even a driving force as the campaign centers around your ever-growing fortress. Fundamentally I think they did a solid job working this classical mentality into 5e, not perfect, but solid.

The rules for establishing your strongholds are straightforward and seem actually achievable in most campaigns. I also appreciate the variety. Sadly, this is where I start to have complaints about the system. Strongholds grant their owners extremely powerful buffs, and even attract entire armies to fight by your side. Integrating them will mean playing a very different sort of game though. Players with a functioning stronghold will be significantly more powerful. The retainers are the most straightforward of the two and are fundamentally the same as your normal NPCs.

They did something with their stat blocks though that I rather appreciated. Often, when you start dealing with hirelings, summons, or other such NPCs, you basically double up on what you need to know and keep track of. If each follower has a full character sheet, a player character with two followers has triple the amount of bookkeeping to do.

They did a good job of varying these units up and the book provides creative options for creating your own units. This 5th level adventure primarily serves as an introduction to stronghold mechanics, as the PCs clear out an orc infested castle part-way through and then must defend it from an impending siege.

It serves as a good introduction to the mechanics, but not much else. The 56 here is the number of straight up, marvelously designed and beautifully illustrated monsters.

They mainly consist of biblically inspired and therefore bizarre angels, truly grotesque fiends, and otherworldly mechanized beings of pure law. Most of these were way too strong to give to players in most cases, though they could each be used as campaign-long plot points and McGuffins. The core of the book which is the stronghold and follower mechanics are rock solid. The simplified follower rules help to limit bookkeeping as the character count grows, and it transitions into large-scale warfare naturally and without too much fuss.

My biggest complaint is the massive power boost that strongholds grant. I also found the adventure path lacking, not terrible, but the bland setting and trope filled plot made me completely uninterested in running it.

I love a lot of what this book has to offer. I almost want to recommend it on the included bestiary alone, but it has its problems. Thinking about other classes? Hungry for Adventure? Need New Dice? This time, I'll be looking at how to use this new material in a Freeport campaign. First of all, Freeport is a very highly detailed city that already contains many competing organizations with established strongholds. Any attempt to create a new stronghold in the Serpent's Teeth, much less within Freeport's own city walls, will be sure to experience resistance from the current powers that be. Players and DMs should not let that discourage them from using the stronghold rules--intrigue and political scheming are hallmarks of the City of Adventure, after all! And some bold adventurer is behind the founding of most of the city's iconic organizations, from the Syndicate to the Wizard's Guild to the office of Sea Lord itself.

Official Owlbear — Strongholds and Followers Book (Hardcover + PDF)

The Fifth Edition of Dungeons and Dragons represented a return to form in many ways over the Fourth, and the merits of that from a rules perspective can be debated. What is not debatable, though, is that the closed-off approach to third-party material which Wizards of the Coast used in response to the d20 debacle of the s went too far, and the return of the Open Gaming License for Fifth Edition is a good thing. Coming out of , the largest tabletop RPG Kickstarter in terms of money raised was one of these third-party products, a supplement called Strongholds and Followers. Strongholds and Followers is the brainchild of Matt Colville , a designer with over two decades of experience in both the tabletop and digital realms.
