June 1, David Hunter. In the past three decades, protecting the global environment has emerged as one of the major challenges in international relations. No fewer than ten global environmental treaties have been negotiated as well as literally hundreds of regional and bilateral agreements. Governments have also endorsed dozens of comprehensive action plans, most notably the page Agenda 21, which set forth a blueprint for implementing sustainable development. The result is an increasingly complex and rich body of international environmental law and policy.

For years now, humans have mistreated and contaminated the very environment that sustains them. The list of issues surrounding our environment go on, but there are three major ones that affect the majority of them overall: global warming and climate change; water pollution and ocean acidification; and loss of biodiversity. These three issues need immediate attention and proactive action on our part to ensure conservation of the only habitable planet which we call our home. And, focusing attention on these three major topics will have a ripple effect on a number of smaller environmental issues like inefficient recycling systems and food waste. Global Warming and Climate Change Human activities have made global warming and climate change a global threat. The rising levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases have caused an increase in average global temperatures, extreme weather events, rising sea levels and other negative changes. These changes are directly and indirectly affecting all life forms.

Yet its capacity to provide for each one of these individuals is threatened by population growth, climate change, deforestation, collapse of fisheries, desertification, air pollution and scarcity of fresh water. The full extent of our shared global environmental problems goes far beyond the well-publicised challenge of global climate change or global warming. In fact, one of the elements often forgotten is the complicated relationship between human beings and their environment.
Global environmental problems involve one or more of the following:. Rapid Population Growth. Food Production and Equitable Distribution. Global Warming. Depletion of the Atmospheric Ozone. Acid Precipitation and Air Pollution.
The Biggest Environmental Problems Of 2020
Environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Environmentalism , a social and environmental movement , addresses environmental issues through advocacy, education and activism. The amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is possibly above the threshold that can potentially cause climate change. It is the main driver behind rising humanitarian needs and we are seeing its impact. The number of people affected and the damages inflicted by extreme weather has been unprecedented.
Report on Global Environmental Competitiveness pp Cite as. Environment is the foundation and support of human existence and survival and the guarantee of sustainable human development; environmental protection has undoubtedly become a common understanding and development strategy of all countries of the world. Now humankind is striving into the historical process of postindustrial society and is trying to reach rebalance with environment in later stage of development.
Climate change is the big environmental problem that humanity will face over the next decade, but it isn't the only one. We'll take a look at some of them — from water shortages and loss of biodiversity to waste management — and discuss the challenges we have ahead of us. This coming decade will be vital when it comes to solving the big environmental issues facing our planet. The third decade of the 21st century has begun and the environmental challenges we have ahead of us, set out in the UN's Agenda for Sustainable Development, are many. This global plan of action adopted in puts forward specific measures to achieve a world that is fairer, more prosperous and more respectful of the environment within ten years.

Europe is contributing to environmental pressures and accelerating feedbacks in other parts of the world through its dependence on fossil fuels, mining products and other imports.

The earth has entered a period of hydrological, climatological, and biological change that differs from previous episodes of global change in the extent to which it is human in origin. To explain or predict the course of the present global environmental changes, one must therefore understand the human sources, consequences, and responses, some of which can alter the course of global change. This book examines what is known about the human dimensions of global environmental change, identifies the major immediate needs for knowledge, and recommends a strategy for building that knowledge over the next years.
Together with the widening realisation of the problem of poverty, there has been an increasing awareness of the existence of a second global crisis: that of environmental degradation. Concerns about the state of the environment have deep historical roots, but those concerns came to prominence during the s following the publication in of a seminal book by Rachel Carson, Silent Spring , and the emergence of the modern environmentalist movement in some countries Carson Since then, and particularly since the s, considerable scientific efforts have been made to investigate and to document the state of the global environment and the nature of global environmental change. Those efforts have been prompted by widespread concerns that the pace and extent of development in many parts of the world have far outstripped the capacity of natural ecosystems to absorb the impacts of human activities. Numerous environmental changes have been identified as issues of global concern: desertification; the depletion of fuelwood; the destruction of tropical rainforest and rapid declines in forest cover; the modification of coastal ecosystems; the reduced availability and quality of drinking water; the depletion of soil resources; the over-exploitation of fisheries; food shortages; species extinction and the loss of biodiversity; stratospheric ozone depletion; rapidly rising levels of fossil fuel and demand for energy supplies; and climate change. The sheer number, magnitude and complexity of these issues can seem overwhelming and some commentators have argued that they amount to a cumulative, sustained human impact on the environment that has profoundly transformed the surface of the Earth. Many assessments of global environmental change have been produced since the s.
